recent reads + spring tbr

While going through my Goodreads account to pull books for this post, I realized I have really been slacking on my reading this year. I went through so many books last year, but some of them were audiobooks and I also feel like I wasn’t as busy as I am now. I really want to make it more of a priority to set aside reading time in each day, but I usually am so tired at bedtime that I read two pages and pass out. I feel like with summer approaching, I’ll read more at the pool or sitting outside after work. Today’s post is a roundup of my favorite books of this year (so far!) and my spring TBR!

I’ve read 18 books so far this year, but I honestly wouldn’t recommend all of them. I’m trying to be better about reading high quality books, even if they take longer to get through, rather than cheesy, cringy books that don’t have much substance. A few of my faves:

Thunderhead // This is the second book to a series I read a few years ago, but I forgot a lot of what happened. Scythe is the first of the series, which I finished back in December. If you like dystopian/futuristic type books, I’d definitely recommend! It’s such an interesting plot concept and a wild twist at the end.

Onyx Storm // The long awaited third book in the Fourth Wing series! It took me 25% to get invested because the story felt a little all over the place, but of course then I got so hooked. I love the world building in this series and the plot just continues to thicken. The last 20% goes wild and I was left with so many questions. I need the next book asap.

Your Story Has a Villain // My small group read another book by this author for our book study last semester, and this is JP’s newest book.  I really like how JP talks about spiritual warfare and being aware of the enemy at work in our lives, but he doesn’t do it in a scary, fear-mongering way. He ties in personal stories, analogies, and lots of scripture. It’s such an important reminder of how crucial scripture is to guide our life and give us wisdom and defense against real evil forces at work to lead us away from God.

11/22/63 // This book took me forever to read, but I’m glad I finished! This book had been on my list for years, and my dad had always been recommending it. Even though it’s so long, the story flows really well and never felt slow or boring. I listened to some on audiobook, and the narrator was great!

The Favorites // This book helped get me out of a reading slump! It was finally a book that I was excited to read and kept me turning pages. It reminds me of Carrie Soto is Back but in the ice skating world, and is written in a mix of narrative style/interview style. Lots of drama, high stakes competition, and interesting characters!

Winter in Paradise series // I had read the first book in this series a couple of years ago, but never finished it. I started it back up on my trip to Chicago last week and read the second and third books over the weekend, they were such fun reads. I love Elin Hilderbrand’s writing and the way she describes the warm, tropical setting of St. John.

Spring TBR

I feel like there are so many good books coming out soon! As much as I try to have a variety of books I read, I do love a good lighthearted beach read. They get me so excited for summer and transport me to the beach. I also want to get back into thrillers and mysteries, and maybe try another fantasy series!

This Book Will Bury Me // I’ve read a book by this author before and it really sucked me in, so I’m hoping this does the same! True crime, puzzle solving, and serial killers… sounds right up my alley haha.

Sunrise on the Reaping // I actually just started this, so updates to come! I got reobsessed with the Hunger Games series after the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes movie a couple of years ago, so this has been on my radar ever since it was announced. It’s about Haymitch’s story in the 50th Hunger Games, when he was 16.

Great Big Beautiful Life // Any Emily Henry book is an automatic read for me, and this is her upcoming book this year! I love all her books, especially Happy Place. She is just such a good writer and creates such great characters + plots.

It’s a Love Story // Annabel Monaghan is another author whose books I’ve read all of, and her books are always so fun and perfect for summer. I actually met her a couple of years ago when she was signing books at a shop in Nantucket, and she was so kind!

Don’t Let Him In // Lisa Jewell always writes such eery, twisty thrillers, and the synopsis of this sounds so good. I think it’ll be perfect quick thriller to read at the pool!

Atmosphere // I love Taylor Jenkins Reid’s writing, and I’ve read almost all of her books. This one is set during the 1980s Space Shuttle program and I just know it’ll be a good one!

One Golden Summer // Sometimes Carley Fortune’s books are a little cheesy, but she always writes such summer-y books. They make me want to spend a week in a lakehouse!

All the Colors of the Dark // I’m going to be honest, I don’t fully know what this book is about, but it’s gotten amazing reviews on Goodreads. “A missing person mystery, a serial killer thriller, a love story, a unique twist on each…” is part of the synopsis, which definitely sounds interesting!

Say You’ll Remember Me // Sometimes this author’s books are a little cringy and cheesy, but they make for good summer reads. I’ve been reading some of the reviews from people who’ve gotten arcs and they seem mostly positive so far, so I def want to pick it up!

Any books on your radar? Let me know!
